Instagram Appearance vs. Reality

Recently I have been getting more into Instagram and improving my content on there. That means occasionally having dozens of people stare at you as you snap away to get the perfect picture or almost falling off a ledge. But I mean, it's worth it, right? Today I am sharing a few of my Instagrams and sharing what is actually happening. I have seen a few posts similar to this, but I thought it would be fun to share my side! Because we all know my desk isn't always perfectly styled and I just happen to snap a casual picture while I am working away...

The Typical Accessory Picture

What I am trying to show...
I am just taking a nice break at 2 in the afternoon to snap a picture between errands. My outfits always match and I never forget to add a cute accessory before leaving.

What is actually happening...
I am actually standing in my garage in front of the window to get good lighting because if I went outside all my creepy neighbors would stare at me. And yes, I did move the time up on my watch so it wouldn't look like it took me 20 minutes to edit it and get it up.

The Froyo Shot

What I am trying to show...
I'm on a fun afternoon outing getting froyo with my friends and catching up because yes, I actually do have a life.

What actually happening...
All I really just want chocolate froyo with chocolate toppings, but I decided that it would look to much like chocolate vomit in pictures so I opted for French Vanilla. I also only added the M&M's so it would have a little bit of color without me actually having to add berries or anything colorful. And my friends may or may not have slowly been scooting away from me as I snapped 10 different pictures of my creation.

The Brunch Shot
What I am trying to show...
I go out to brunch with friends all the time because we love the delicious food and the bonding that happens at brunch.

What is actually happening...
When we were being seated the host asked us which table we wanted to sit at:
A) a table for 2 not by a window
B) a table for 4-6 that was by a window
Which one would you choose? B, because of the better lighting, right? He looked at me a little funny because we obviously didn't need all the room, but he just didn't have his priorities straight... it's all about the lighting, buddy!

The Shopping Picture

What I am trying to show...
Just doing some casual shopping when I stumbled across the notebook that perfectly describes my life. Let me just snap a picture of it before I buy it and plan my whole life and make pretty lists inside of it.

What is actually happening...
In reality, I had to huddle in the back corner of the store because the friends I were with were so embarrassed that I was taking a picture of a notebook.  I also had to do a few different spots and angles until the lighting turned out decent, which only embarrassed them further.
The Home Office Shot

What I am trying to show...
Just sitting at my desk eating some fresh fruit and doing a little blog work. Oh, and I have my sunglasses by in case I need to get up and take a quick walk outside to clear my mind.

What is actually happening...
I put a piece of white paper on the floor because I needed a white background and my desk isn't white. Since my kiwi matched my current post-its I had to style a picture and share, but it looked a little too boring. So I threw in a few paper clips and called it a day.
The Home Decor Shot

What I am trying to show...
I have my whole life together because I color code the books I am reading. Just letting you guys know I am actually being productive this summer and doing some light reading.

What is actually happening...
I realized I hadn't posted on Instagram recently, so I just picked up the closest blue things that looked good together and wound up with this. People love to see what other people are reading, right?

The "I Almost Died" Shot

What I am trying to show...
Spending the morning shopping in the city when I looked up and saw the gorgeous ceiling! I snapped a picture to remember it by before I moved on to the next section to buy more pretty items.

What is actually happening...
Leaning over the edge trying not to fall or drop my phone while fitting the whole ceiling in. Needless to say, even after 10 shots, I couldn't do it. Oh well, this will have to do.

The I Love Flowers Picture

What It Looks Like...
On a casual nature walk passing by gorgeous flowers. I like to surround myself with pretty flowers even when I am getting in a workout and not by the peonies on my desk.

What I Was Really Thinking/ Doing...
I was on a walk with the girls I babysit for and we were hunting for a certain statue that is in the park somewhere. Along the way I saw this so of course I have to take multiple pictures before I got the perfect shot. None of them were happy or appreciated a good flower... sigh.

The "My Pet Is Cute" Picture

What It Looks Like...
I am editing a blog post with my cat helping me while snuggled under her favorite blanket.

What I Am Really Thinking/Doing...
Nope, this one wasn't staged and is exactly what it looks like. he literally is always by me and yes, is always under blankets even in the middle of summer.

Let me know in the comments if you liked or hated this post... I know it was a little different than what I usually post, but it was so much fun to write and I think all bloggers or anyone who takes lots of pictures will understand this!

  15. Ha! This is so awesome! I don't get embarrassed taking photos anymore in front of my friends, I just laugh with them. But so agree with the lighting thing. On an open table reservation I literally wrote: Need to be sitting by a window because I'll be taking photos for my blog" lol
